Background:
Currently, the wrongfully convicted are entitled to only $20,000/year (or double their salary at the time of their conviction) for each year of wrongful incarceration. No reentry services of any kind are available.
The current framework consigns the wrongfully convicted to a life of poverty without any social services or assistance, despite the profound needs of the exonerated upon release.
Proposed legislation would increase the annual amount of compensation by $30,000/year, making New Jersey’s law consistent with the federal law ($50,000/year).
